Moving is ranked as one of the most stressful life events, even more so than getting married - after all, there's so much to organise, double-check and think about. One of the most nerve-wracking tasks is packing breakable dishware and glasses. Here are some tips and tricks to give your glasses the best possible chance of making it through the big move unscathed!
We accumulate so many mugs and cups, from birthday presents to conference freebies, and so many of them go unused at the back of the cupboard. Before you commit to packing them, consider how many of them you'll need, giving away any that aren't going to be in frequent rotation.
Place a layer of loosely scrunched butcher's paper or bubble wrap in the bottom of the box to prevent any heavy impact on the bottom layer of glassware.
Fill the inside of the glassware or mug with butcher's paper; some people recommend bubble wrap, but butcher's paper is more eco-friendly and cost-effective. Then, wrap the glass with a sheet of butcher's paper too, ensuring all edges are completely covered and none of the glass is exposed.
If you have stackable glasses that fit snugly together, it is possible to wrap them together: stuff the base of the first glass with paper, wrap as per normal and then slot the second glass in. It's best to only pack two or three glasses together in this way to avoid creating an awkward stack that could fall over and smash while being unpacked.
The most commonly broken sections of glassware are handles and stems as they are thinner and more delicate. Use an extra layer of bubble wrap or butcher's paper to cushion these areas and keep them from absorbing too much force. Wine glasses or champagne flutes are notoriously fragile, so if you have lots of these or are particularly concerned, there are specific boxes designed to keep them separate, padded and secure during transit.
The more empty spaces in your box, the more likely it is that the contents will shift and bang into one another during the move. Use clean socks, towels or pillowcases to fill any larger gaps and keep the glasses in place. That being said, also take care not to overstuff the box, as this will push the glasses up against one another and reduce the effectiveness of your packing materials. So use the Goldilocks rule - not too hard, not too soft, but just right!
Once a box has been filled with your glasses, tape it up and write 'FRAGILE' on all sides, in bold and clear lettering. This lets anyone handling the box know that there are breakable items inside and they should be extra careful with it.
